Obituary of Evelyn Archer

Evelyn Archer was a former Lancaster City Councillor, The head of Morecambe Town Council and chair of the Friends of the Winter Gardens, she sadly passed away at The Royal Lancaster Infirmary on November 4, aged 78.

Evelyn was the “heart and soul” of the Winter Gardens, she worked tirelessly to lead the restoration of the iconic building, which resulting it being relaunched as an entertainment venue once again.

Evelyn represented Poulton ward and was cabinet member for the economy, she was elected as a city councillor in 1991.
Evelyn Archer was once the leader of the largest political group on Lancaster City Council – the Morecambe Bay Independents – until
Evelyn retired from the role in 2010. That same year, her husband Mike, and Evelyn were invited to the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. Sadly Mike died of cancer in December 2010.

Over the years Evelyn had become friends with Thora Hird and Ken Dodd, and had a passion for bringing entertainment back to Morecambe.
Evelyn leaves behind her daughters Linda and Julie, son Alan, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Following her funeral, the wake for Evelyn was on the 14th November at 11:30am, it was taken place at the Winter Gardens and that all would be welcome to attend.

Following the sad news of Evelyn Archer, our local MP David Morris released the following statement:

Absolutely Devastated to hear news this morning of Evelyn Archer passing away. Evelyn was a true champion of Morecambe but more than that she was a friend.
She achieved absolutely amazing things at the Winter Gardens and being able to go to shows again at the Winter Gardens was only possible due to Evelyn’s passion and tenacity and drive.
I will make sure that I continue to support the Friends of the Winter Gardens to receive funding to achieve Evelyn’s dream of fully restoring the Winter Gardens.
Evelyn had so much passion for our town and will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with her loving family at this sad time.
